How to prepare

What to Wear

Colors: avoid having everyone wear all one color. Complementary colors create visual interest and harmony. Yellow, bright orange, bright green, and neon colors generally do not photograph well.

Fit: form-fitting, but not tight, clothing is most flattering. Generally speaking, sleeves are always better than sleeveless and 3/4 sleeves on women tends to be very flattering in photos. Pants are always better than shorts for men.

Glasses: if glasses have to be worn during photos, I will try to reduce glare and distortion, but be aware they can’t usually be edited out. I highly recommend not wearing transition glasses.

Makeup Tips

Make sure to apply your makeup in natural light. I recommend using matte colors. Shimmer is pretty, but tends not to photograph well. Tinted lip gloss is always flattering in photos and doesn’t have the issues lipstick often has of getting on teeth, going outside the lip line, and being uneven.

Hair Tips

If you are wearing your hair down, make sure to bring a brush for touch-ups. Flyaways will show up in photos, so try using hair spray and brushing them down or whatever method works best for you.

Outfit Color Ideas

One strategy for large families is to pick three colors and wear different shades of each. Another strategy is to have two main colors and a third mixed in for a pop of color throughout. For smaller families and couples, choosing a simple palette of neutrals and a color, or a few complementary colors, works well. Accessories are a great way to tie in colors that other family members are wearing.
